David is Head of Research and Applied Learning at the Foundation, where he has worked for 18 years. He has led the organisation’s involvement in research projects that enable people to support their own, and each others’ mental health. During his 30 years in the sector, he has developed national service user networks in England, Scotland and Wales, been a chief executive of a national charity and a non-executive director, and vice-chair of a national independent, non-departmental public body. He is now developing public mental health as an academic discipline and taking an evidence-based approach to improving public mental health, including his role as an editor of the Oxford Handbook of Philosophy and Public Mental Health. David has substantial personal experience of using mental health services, including time as a detained patient, and now applies this experience and the learning from it in his work. He is currently co-chair of the ethics, policy and position committee of the International Society for Psychiatric Genetics, a fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health, and has written and edited several academic publications. Professor Owen Epstein is a renowned and pioneering professor of gastroenterology, based at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London. He has a special interest in the innovation of healthcare and the technologies used to ease the patient journey. These include whole bowel wireless capsule (pill) endoscopy and hydrogen or 13C breath testing variously for lactose intolerance, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, Helicobacter pylori, stomach pump function and colon cancer screening using minimally invasive colon capsule endoscopy. He also has considerable experience in the physiological assessment of the vagus nerve and stress and, in particular, its relationship to abnormal gut feelings. Professor Epstein has had a hugely successful career and is regarded as one of the leaders in minimally-invasive techniques and a gentler patient journey.

Alison teaches mindfulness and meditation to individuals and groups. She also trains mindfulness teachers. All of us face challenges and upheavals. Mindfulness can help us deal more skillfully and proactively with whatever life brings. Alison has practised meditation for more than 25 years. Her journey came about from recognising the problems of an overthinking mind. A desire to stop the cycle of ruminating about the past and/or worrying about the future that takes joy from the present. For her practice, she draws on neuroscience, neuroplasticity, pain science, evolutionary biology, epigenetics and emotional intelligence. Her work is informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy, and traditional philosophy.

This is a one-day course, led by former paramedic Malcolm Parnell. Malcolm has years of experience in first aid issues, a qualified first aid instructor, and certified as an instructor in Mental Health First Aid by MHFAE (Mental Health First Aid England). This course is split into a number of sessions, with “breakout groups” as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you’ll understand the basics of mental health problems, be able to care for yourself and offer support to others. This course will better prepare you to manage individuals with mental health issues and help you understand the supporting networks available to them. You will be better equipped to help reduce incidences of mental ill-health.

Robert “Skip” George, D.C. previously practiced chiropractic in San Diego and La Jolla, CA from 1980-2021, and recently moved to Logan, Utah. He is one of the handful of chiropractic doctors nationally that integrates chiropractic, rehabilitation and sports performance training. Professor Bill Ribbans is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor of Sports Medicine. Bill qualified from the Royal Free Hospital, London in 1980. As a junior doctor he trained in London before undertaking Fellowships in Sheffield and at Harvard University. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. He was a Consultant at the Royal Free from 1991-1996 and then at Northampton General Hospital 1996-2012. Bill has been trained and practised in all aspects of Orthopaedic Surgery but has principal interests in the lower limb particularly the knee, ankle and foot. Presently about 40% of his patients travel from outside of Northamptonshire and 35% attend seeking second opinions. The spectrum of patients range from children over 10 years old to the elderly.

Ian trained at Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School and qualified in 1992. His postgraduate medical training was then undertaken in various hospitals across the UK, including Southend, Peterborough, Northampton, Nottingham and Oxford. In 1998 Ian started specialist training in Trauma & Orthopaedics as a Specialist Registrar in the North West Thames region. During his training, Ian spent a period at Southampton General Hospital with Mr David Barrett, as a specialist Knee Fellow. Ian completed his specialist training in 2003, and was then awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) and was entered onto the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council. Ian was appointed as a Consultant in the Orthopaedic Department at Ealing Hospital in April 2005 and took up his position there in June 2005. Prior to this he was employed as a Locum Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant at Hillingdon Hospital for 11 months. Ian has now left the NHS and works exclusively in the independent sector.
Laurie Hartman is Associate Professor of Osteopathic Technique at the British School of Osteopathy, and has been teaching osteopathic and manipulative technique and manual therapy since 1964. Prof Hartman has spent over 50 years as one the UK's premier osteopaths. He has threatened to retire on numerous occasions in the past, but we have managed to get him to agree to one more course! This, therefore, is a genuinely rare opportunity to learn from the master. Over his years in practice, Laurie made it his mission to develop precise, safe, effective techniques for manipulation of every possible joint, and has lectured across the world on the topic. Few, if any, can equal his skill in applying high-velocity thrusts. The expression "minimal leverage" is possibly inaccurate, although we use it here because it is the most widely understood description of this method of working. In fact, Laurie will show you how to incorporate a multitude of levers, so that the movement itself is tiny, and the stress on the patient minimal. You can expect very personal supervision - the maximum number Laurie is prepared to teach is 24 (ie 12 students working at any one time). He is also very responsive to student queries, so if there's a particular technique that you have trouble with, he'll willingly demonstrate how you can perfect it.

Petra graduated from the British School of Osteopathy (BSO), where she undertook a specialist training in OsteoMAP - osteopathy, mindfulness and acceptance-based programme, integrating acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with osteopathic treatment for people suffering from persistent musculoskeletal pain.
