Your Tutors

Bob Gerwin is Associate Professor of Neurology at the John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.  Although he has now retired from medical practice, he remains very active in teaching, writing and research.  As a doctor, his own area of expertise within neurology was myofascial pain, chronic pain and headache.

With over 50 years experience, there can be few people better qualified in trigger points, dry needling and myofascial pain.

Simeon Niel-Asher is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work on treating the frozen shoulder.  However, he too is deeply immersed in the role of trigger points and dry needling, and has cooperated with Bob Gerwin on many occasions in training courses across the globe.

As a very experienced osteopath, Simeon is perfectly placed to put this course into the context of manual therapy.

About the Course

Active trigger points play a huge role in myofascial pain.

Understanding how they work and how to treat them will have a quick and significant impact on your treatment outcomes.

IMS/Dry needling is a simple, practical tool that you can use every day.  It involves placing acupuncture needles into intramuscular taut bands/trigger points with the aim of stimulating a “twitch response”.

Treating this way is quick (mostly a few seconds) and provides immediate relief in the majority of cases, thus improving the patient's experience.  Not only will your patients be delighted with the results, they will tell their friends all about it.

IMS is also uniquely efficient: it allows you to treat just as effectively in a shorter amount of time and is a perfect adjunct to your regular treatment protocols.

This is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about trigger point needling from Neurologist, Prof Bob Gerwin, MD, and Osteopath Simeon Niel-Asher.

In this mainly practical course you will be taught how to treat a variety of painful conditions using Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) - also known as dry needling/medical acupuncture.

The course is 75% practical, with close supervision by Prof Gerwin and Simeon.  For this reason, numbers are strictly limited.
You'll cover 17 of the main muscular trigger points - the ones most pertinent for each body region:

    • Headache: Sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, splenius cervicis.
    • Shoulder pain: infraspinatus, latissimus dorsi, triceps, subscapularis
    • (Tennis) Elbow: extensor carpi radials longus and brevis
    • Low back pain: erector spinae (longissimus thoracis and iliocostalis, quadratus lumborum
    • Hip pain: gluteus medius, piriformis
    • Knee pain: Rectus femoris, vastus medialis
    • Heel pain: gastrocnemius and soleus

    Dates and Times

The course takes place from Friday 8th until Sunday 10th September.

Days 1 and 2 will start at 9:00am and finish at about 5:00pm, with a couple of breaks for refreshments and an hour or so for lunch.  Lunch is provided at a very nice local restaurant.

On the Sunday, we'll try to finish a bit earlier, so that you can get home in good time if you need to.  Therefore, we'll work straight through from 9:00 till 2:00. We'll then break for a quick lunch (not provided, but we can organise something for you!) and return to the studio for more practice until about 4:00.

    Cost

The full cost of the course is £933.  However, there's a £75 discount available until 20th August.

APM members also benefit from an additional £75 discount.

To make things easier for you, the cost can be spread over 4 equal, monthly instalments.  There is no additional charge, and the option to do this will appear on your booking form.

    Eligibility

Safety will be a very important aspect of the training, therefore all students must have a good understanding of anatomy, as well as the clinical reasoning skills to put the training into practice appropriately. A list of those who are automatically eligible to attend is shown on the right.

Other therapists, including students of osteopathy or chiropractic, might also be eligible - please let us know if you would like to attend, and we will confirm with the tutors.

    The course is ideal for:

    Doctors
    Osteopaths
    Chiropractors
    Physiotherapists
    Acupuncturists

Before attending, you should check with your insurance provider that they will extend your cover to include dry needling.  This is not normally a problem, but insurance is clearly essential given the invasive nature of the technique.
