PHYSICAL THERAPY AND THE PERFORMING ARTS

with Laurence Kirk, Ashley Stafford and…the band

JOIN US IN THE STUDIO  FOR A GREAT EVENING’S ENTERTAINMENT!

About the CPD

Performing artists are in regular need of our therapy because of the unusual strains they put on their bodies.  Of course, their bodies are not much different to anyone else’s but the advice we give and the way we communicate has to be adapted to their lifestyles and their personalities (like elite sports players, they might not respond readily to all the advice we offer!).

So this evening will be 90 minutes of top quality CPD examining how we can best adapt our skills to this particular patient group.

It will involve analysing their performance styles and demonstrating how subtle changes can be made to help them overcome their particular problems.

About our Guests

For this event we have two expert speakers, both highly experienced in dealing with performance artists.

Ashley Stafford is a London osteopath, but also a professional musician and singer, with more than 35 years’ experience of teaching voice and singing across all levels of experience.  For 21 years he was vocal professor at the Royal College of Music.

Laurence Kirk, another highly experienced osteopath, also has a special interest in performing arts medicine and has been involved with the Royal Shakespeare Company for many years.   He also has a long involvement in teaching osteopathy.

About the Band

Two of the band, Anna and Dhil, are professional musicians:  a singer and guitarist respectively.  Both suffer from the sort of musculoskeletal problems that are common in their line of work.

The drummer, Malcolm, will be know to many people involved in APM as he’s Steven’s regular partner-in-crime on our first aid courses.  Although not a professional musician, he’s regularly found thrashing his drumkit either with APM’s own band or just for fun.  In the past, he performed semi-professionally and he too has the back problems to prove it.

About the Evening

Apart from the performance connected with the CPD, the band are going to carry on playing after the show finishes at 9:00pm.  What’s more, there will be food and drink and maybe even dancing.
