SUMMARY:Sustainably Correct Microbiome - James Kinross
DESCRIPTION:Dr Kinross is a Reader in Colorectal Surgery and a Consultant Surgeon at Imperial College London. His clinical interest is in robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer. He performs translational research in the fields of early colorectal cancer detection and prevention and in surgical technology transfer. \n1) The gut microbiome: His group is studying how the gut microbiome causes colorectal cancer and how it may be engineered to improve operative outcomes. He works with the African Microbiome Institute to determine how diet/microbiome interactions cause western diseases such as cancer\, and he is a Co-I on the Horizon 2020 funded GROWTH consortium studying how the microbiome influences anastomotic healing and surgical gut health. He cofounded the International Cancer Microbiome Consortium. \n2) iKnife: He is the PI on the NIHR funded iEndoscope project that uses intra-operative mass spectrometry (known as Real-time Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry or REIMS) for improving precision in the endoluminal and laparoscopic treatment of colorectal cancer. He is involved in a number of different systems biology projects that leverage metabolic profiling in the fields of inflammatory bowel disease and \n3) Digital Surgery: For the last five years his research group has developed technologies in the fields of artificial intelligence for real time decision support in the operating room and his group is developing extended reality technologies for anatomical image augmentation. His team deployed the HoloLens 2 head set as part of the COVID19 response to minimise transmission rates amongst front line staff. \n4) Data Science: James is the PI on the PanSurg project which has delivered education and primary research on the impact of Covid19 on surgical services. As part of this work\, his team are building a secure continually updating web-source processing pipeline for REaltime DAta Synthesis and Analysis (REDASA) of Scientific Literature on COVID-19. \nDuring his training\, James was an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Surgery and an Ethicon Laparoscopic Fellow in Colorectal Surgery. He was awarded a Royal College of Surgeons of England training fellowship during his PhD and he was funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences as an early stage lecturer. SUMMARY:Spinal Surgery - Andrew Young
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Young is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust. \nMr Young qualified from Guy’s and St.Thomas’ Medical School\, London\, before further surgical training in London\, Brighton and Oxford. He undertook Specialist Orthopaedic training in the East Midlands\, including at the University of Leicester Teaching Hospitals. He completed two years of the Royal College of Surgeons-accredited Senior Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Spine Surgery at Nottingham \nHe holds a BSc degree in Immunology and a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering on top of his medical degrees. \nHe has interests in degenerative spinal conditions and\, in particular\, the application of minimally invasive techniques where appropriate. He is a keen teacher and has taught on many courses to a wide range of delegates. His research interests focus on the biomechanical engineering aspects of surgery. He reviews articles for the BMJ.

DESCRIPTION:Nick Jones was appointed Chief Executive and Registrar of the General Chiropractic Council in February 2019 and is thrilled to lead the team working across the chiropractic system. \nNick started his working career in social housing and was drawn to a career in regulation; working first for the housing regulator and then within system healthcare regulation ending up at the Care Quality Commission in 2010. From then until joining the GCC he was a Director at the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority\, the government regulator responsible for making sure fertility clinics and research centres comply with the law. \nHe believes that regulation undertaken well incentivises improvement and high-quality care for patients\, its fundamental purpose. He lives in north London with his partner and three sons.

DESCRIPTION:Functional Active Release\nThere are so many tools to choose from when addressing MSK problems\, and particularly the muscle components of the case in hand. \nFAR is a specialised approach to manual therapy designed by expert osteopath and lecturer Robin Lansman\, encompassing a system of assessment\, treatment\, hands-on therapy and self-care. \nWhereas in traditional manual therapies the patient lies still whilst the therapist treats them\, in Functional Active Release\, treatment is given whilst carrying out functional movements of the part of the body being treated.
